God, thank You for the birth of Your Son! I'm grateful that through Him, I'm able to find peace. I may live in a world that is full of unrest, but I know You don't give to me what the world gives. Thank You for the wonderful gift of Jesus. I am forever grateful for all He's done for me. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

A PRAYER IN THE MIDST OF DARKNESS

God, even though I am faced with some darkness, I hold tight to Your promises. You are true to Your Word. And Your Word says that You will turn my tears into joy. I trust in You, God, and in Your timing. I may not see the light yet, but I hope in what's to come. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

A PRAYER FOR FREEDOM

God, thank You for rescuing me from darkness and evil. I am so grateful You have made me a citizen of Your kingdom. Help me to remember the freedom I have with You when I face hard situations. THE FULFILLMENT OF PROMISES MADE LONG AGO

"Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord."

To modern ears, this verse is a familiar, warm, and comforting centerpiece of the Christmas Story. But to those who first heard these words from the angel on the night Jesus was born, every word was electric, buzzing with fulfilled expectations.

A Savior.
Born in Bethlehem, the town of David.
The Messiah.
The Lord.

For centuries, Israel had lived with a promise. The prophet Isaiah had declared, "To us a child is born, to us a son is given... and He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). Jeremiah had spoken of a righteous branch from David's line, a King who would reign wisely and bring justice (Jeremiah 23:5). Micah, too, had foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, David's town (Micah 5:2).

YOU WILL BE CALLED A PROPHET OF THE MOST HIGH

Today we do the final shopping, wrap the last of the gifts, bake the last cookies or pies, prepare the meal for tomorrow, or if you're Italian, tonight. What are our plans for celebrating Jesus? Is going to church in your plans? Will you read the story of the first Christmas from the Gospel of Luke? This is what religious educators call a "teachable moment." This is the time when children are open to hear the reason why we celebrate, to know that it's not about Santa Claus. Do they know the story of the real Saint Nicholas? Christmas has become so overly commercialized that we need to be current day prophets.

After God had given Mary instructions, and she'd become pregnant via the Holy Spirit, He sent an angel to assure Joseph of His plans. This stopped Joseph from divorcing Mary. Don't be worried, when you follow the instructions of God in your life. He will take care of everything else.

King Jesus,

You are King of kings and Lord of lords; You dwell in unapproachable Light! I'm grateful that You are also my Shepherd, Companion, and Friend--the One who never lets go of my hand. I worship You in Your holy Majesty. And I draw near You to rest in Your loving Presence. I need You both as God and as Man. Only Your birth on that first, long-ago Christmas could meet all my needs.

Instead of trying to comprehend You incarnation intellectually, I want to learn from the example of the wise men. They followed the leading of a spectacular star, then fell down in humble worship in Your Presence. Inspired by the magi, I long to respond to the wonder of Your holy birth with ardent adoration.
