TRUE HUMILITY AND WISDOM

God granted King Solomon, the great King of Israel, wisdom beyond measure. From this, King Solomon penned much of the book of Proverbs, providing insight and knowledge regarding right living before God.

Solomon begins the book of Proverbs with this statement:

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction."
Proverbs 1:7 ESV

He repeats this truth later in the book:

"The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life."
Proverbs 22:4 ESV

King Solomon had more riches than we can imagine. He was honored among the nations and had a full and prosperous life. We might not be kings, but the truth of this statement is timeless.

Hundreds of years later, Pau wrote a prayer for the Christians in his letter to the Ephesians that can provide context for Proverbs 22:4.

DO NOT LIVE WITH ENVY

Jealousy is a terrible sin. Saul was so jealous of David's popularity that he watched and waited for opportunities to kill him. In spite of this, David so respected God's choice that he refused to kill Saul, even knowing Saul's intent. I hope that you have never been the focus of someone's envy or jealousy. It happens to children in school, to workers in all fields and positions, even to neighbors. Children can be bullied for being too smart, too attractive, for having better clothes, etc. Workers may find that others take credit for what someone else has done. Neighbors have been known to vandalize the property of those they envy. People have been fired when a jealous employee made up stories about misbehavior.

God Almighty, with Your grace and love, make me a vessel for Your message, grace and peace. Ensure I maintain forever a nurturing spirit for Your soul, whose ultimate rest shall be in Your Paradise. Teach me to see beyond the mortal, beyond the ephemeral, and instead my Lord, plunge my sight deep into the truth of Your Word and its everlasting light. I ask all this, in Jesus' Name, Amen

So much of our lives today is centered on surfaces, on appearances. But appearances merely obscure deeper currents of truth. This is Paul's prayer for the Christians in Thessalonica: that Christ would be glorified in them, and that they would be glorified with Him. We can pray that same prayer for ourselves and others. When we do things for God, even giving a cup of water in Jesus' Name, to someone who asks for it, we glorify God. Doing great things for God often means living for Him in the day to day.
