We run from sin because we want nothing to do with it. We strive to grow closer to God, and sin separates us from Him. We wake up each day and decide to change our sinful lifestyle by making no exceptions and doing everything possible to avoid temptations. We live in Christ, not sin, and we will not intentionally sin, thinking we can ask for forgiveness later. Sin is a heavy burden that we take seriously, and we will do everything possible to abolish it.

David, the writer of Psalm 34, preached what he lived. He experienced some intense highs and fierce lows, but he recognized God's presence in the midst of his circumstances. He knew that God was near, and God could change any situation in an instant.

GIFTS FROM GOD

It's appropriate that on this Feast of St. Nicholas, we meditate on Paul's list of gifts that he wants God to bless us. Did I mention that Ephesians is my favorite letter of St. Paul? This quotation is one of the reasons why it is. I like first of all that we are all recognized as children of the same Father, both in heaven and on earth. I am glad that Paul is praying for all of us that the Holy Spirit living within us may strengthen our faith in Christ so that we might be grounded in love.

God is love, and when we love, we are in the fullness with God's love. There is no greater gift anyone can give than their love. The saints are people who knew that. Their lives weren't always perfect, many were sinners before they turned their lives over to God, and then they witnessed God's love to others often to the point of losing their lives.

Give me, O Lord, a strong desire to fellowship with Your people and learn from Your Word at a local Church that I can regularly attend. Help me to find the time and resources to attend it. Help me to consistently attend unless there be a valid reason why I'm unable to for a particular day. I love Your people, O Lord, and desire a regular "church home." Amen.

Exalted Jesus,

You are the Light from on high that dawns upon us--to give Light to those who sit in darkness. Sometimes my circumstances are so difficult and confusing that I feel as if I'm surrounded by darkness. My mind offers up various solutions to my problems, but I've already tried them--without success. So I fret and wonder what to do next, feeling powerless and frustrated. At times like this, I need to look up and see Your Light shining upon me. As I gaze at You in childlike trust, I find hope and rest in Your Presence.
