It is good to meditate on this divine and human nature of Jesus at this time of year, as we think of Him as an infant. And that is what He was. He wasn't born talking and walking as if He had special powers. He needed to be taught. He needed to study God's Word in Scripture. He most likely learned to be a carpenter from Joseph. He also probably drove Mary crazy at times just like any other little boy does his mother. He wouldn't have known His full nature until His death when He returned to the Father. We need to learn; we need to grow in our faith, in our knowledge of God, in our understanding of Scriptures. We will never understand our mission on this earth and how well or poorly we accomplished it until our death when we return to the Father. So make this coming year one of growth in faith and knowledge of God.

My future stretches out before me, all the way into eternity, and You are the Companion who will never leave me--the Guide who knows every step of the way ahead. The Joy that awaits me in heaven is inexpressible and full of Glory! As I prepare to step into a new year, I ask for Your glorious Light to shine upon me and brighten the path before me.

Sometimes they find welcome, and often they are turned back or sent to camps where they hope they will find the help they need to get a better place. For some of you reading this today, this is your story. For others of you, you are on the "welcoming" committee! You are the ones that can make todays immigrants feel more at home, or just as unwelcome as they were in their own country.

We are all children of the one God. We are all called to welcome the stranger as Matthew tells us in 25:35. We are told that if we refuse to do this to the least of our brothers and sisters, we refuse Jesus. If we are given the opportunity to be of service to a family of immigrants lucky enough to escape their situation and come to safety, we need to remember that we are being asked to welcome the Holy Family with love.

Help me learn to receive Your Love in greater height, depth, breadth, and constancy--and to respond with ever-increasing love for You. This will set me free from the bondage of self-absorption and empower me to grow increasingly preoccupied with You, my Savior-King. Then I will be free indeed!

So what could full commitment look like in your everyday life? Here are four things you and your family can do to build a life that's fully committed to the Lord:

-Read your Bible daily. Not out of guilt, but out of hunger. Let God's Word shape your thoughts and decisions.
-Pray continually. As 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, keep an ongoing conversation with God through every moment, big and small.
-Be rooted in your church. Attend regularly. Serve consistently. Don't just go ...belong!
-Live in obedience. When God speaks, follow. His commands aren't burdens; they're the path to real freedom.

Full commitment isn't perfection, it's direction. It means you've set your heart fully toward God and you're pursuing Him with all your have.

I know there were many days when I was teaching when I came home frustrated or upset because of the actions of students and was not a pleasant person to be around. I expected my children to understand and be kind to me! As I look back, I wonder how understanding I was of them when they had had a bad day at school! The fact that it works both ways is easy to forget. Neighborhoods can become war zones when the actions of one or two cause misunderstandings and no one is willing to listen or forgive. We all want others to understand us, to appreciate our differences, to forgive us our faults. As the year comes to a close this week, it's a good time to reflect on our actions over the past year and see what improvements we might want to make in the year to come. It's the year of mercy; let's try to be a little kinder, a little more accepting, a little more merciful in the weeks and months ahead.

I confess that sometimes I get so focused on the problems I see and the predictions I hear that my Joy gets buried under layers of worry and fear. When this happens, I need to bring my concerns to You--talking with You about each one, seeking Your help and guidance, asking You to remove those worry-layers. As I entrust My concerns into Your care and keeping, Joy begins to emerge again. I've learned that the most effective way for me to nurture this gladness is speaking and singing praises to You--the King of Glory!
