Not that this has anything to do with this post, but one of our building projects in the city consisted of a low-income apartment complex being built, it was a small complex, maybe 12 apartments. right in the center of the city. Once done, and they started landscaping, they did not do it with flowers and plants, they took the rest of the plot and planted different fruit trees, dwarf ones, and under all the trees planted the basic salad ingredients and fresh vegetables. We need more of this.

Yes! The DOE needs a complete overhaul. Our YMCA after school program and summer program have a rather large plot of land that the kids grow, maintain, and harvest the foods and herbs grown. Also, our local organic farms offer summer camp classes learning all these skills as well. It is a step in the right direction.
Yes and how to sew. How to cook. How to grow food.

Me too, girls took home ec, learned to cook, sew, do laundry etc. Boys took shop, learned to fix things, car maintenance, etc.
