Believe the behavior - not the potential. Or as I like to call it, believe the pattern not the potential.

As someone who was not taught boundaries but in fact the opposite, I've conditioned myself to always look to someone's potential while ignoring every single red flag moment. Not that there is anything inherently wrong with this. We only get into trouble when we continually look to the potential of someone while bypassing behavior that is hurting us, behavior that remains unchanged, with our voice silenced when we speak up about the behavior.

Holidaze = how you are often left feeling during the holidays - in a daze - if you live with a narcissist.

I can remember previous holidays with him. The tension I would feel. Is he going to act up? Is he even going to allow us to celebrate? I recall one Christmas, he refused to get a tree, so my daughter and I used the little mini tree she had in her room, put it up on a stool in the living room and placed gifts beneath it. There have been far too many Christmas' where he had raged in the garage, trying to find the decorations, throwing boxes around, yelling, swearing, saying he was "done" and was "never going to do this again!"

Unlike years past, I am a different person now. And while I had hoped to have found our new home by now, I was determined that this year he was absolutely not going to ruin another holiday. Not on my watch. That didn't stop him from trying though.

A couple of months ago, I reached out to a woman I had never met but had seen her online for some time. She runs a local business - a very successful business - one she built with love and help and support of others. She was going through a very difficult situation at the time she created that business - escaping a toxic marriage. Her story spoke to me. I literally felt that nudge, that inner prompt to write to her (the "god nod"), share my story, ask for help.
So, I took a chance and wrote her, only I left out the part about asking for help. I just didn't have the courage at that moment. Plus, it felt "too soon". I don't know, I just decided to reach out and open up a dialogue.
A week or so later she wrote back and essentially gave me a religious lesson. While thanking me, she said I needed God, as she did, and I needed to trust God to guide me, that He had a plan for me.
I felt a bit deflated.
