If there's a total comms blackout and the internet is down then I might have to do something desperate like read a book, cook a meal, or (if things are really bad) talk directly to other humans.

It really did. I was on in high school around its peak in the mid 90's. Cells not widely available yet and we were still stuck with pay phones and home phones like this...lol

Actually I had that too. My wife grabbed one from a thrift store recently and I asked my kids to dial my number on it. They were so lost.
