Why would it be in dribs and drabs, and not just everyone at once?
Not sure about this, but very much want to believe it. 😁

I don't know the answer to that, but this isn't the first time I've heard of it.

I thought further on this, and, I am wondering if the mortgage was sold to another lender?
This would certainly zero out the old account.
I guess if they get a statement from the new lender, that would be the case.
Do you stay in touch with anyone who has had a zero balance show up? Did they ever get a statement from another company, or was the debt really zeroed out?

I don't know anyone personally who has had their mortgage paid off, no. But if another lender bought their mortgage I would certainly hope that they notified the borrower before it was purchased by them.
Yes, you would hope so... but, between a rubbish mail service, and the assumption (by many), that the opinion of those paying, is of no consequence - I would not be surprised to find out they never bothered with that step (think of the savings in print and post).
We are in a time, when 'sensible' acts has become an endangered species.
