I thought further on this, and, I am wondering if the mortgage was sold to another lender?

This would certainly zero out the old account.

I guess if they get a statement from the new lender, that would be the case.

Do you stay in touch with anyone who has had a zero balance show up? Did they ever get a statement from another company, or was the debt really zeroed out?
