My view, as I see by reading it, is this:
The Edomites (Jews) being the sons of Esau and having moved from Idumea into Judah were backed up by the Romans who politicaally conquered and annexed Judah to their empire.
Did they not put their Edomitic client-king over Judah, named Herod, who wanted to kill the Christ at birth?
So it seems to me, because Jesus said the pharisees had not the same father as him, that the pharisees were not from the tribes of Israel. But they being from Abraham, were of the tribes of Esau. [It's all right there in the gospels, but people's mind are clouded by doctrine].
Therefore the sons of Jacob (Israel) had at the head of their temples the sons of Esau, who then marvelled that Jesus -despite their false teachings to the Israelites- knew the truths they hid from them.
The pharisees taught the Israelites lies and Jesus came to restore the truth to them, that be God's REAL chosen people
