Compassionate God,

You are the perfect antidote to loneliness. For You are the Lord, my God, who takes hold of my right hand and says to me, "Do not fear; I will help you." Sometimes I like to close my right hand as if I'm grasping Your hand. This symbolic gesture enables me to feel connected to You-to Your living Presence. I especially need this sense of connection when I'm feeling lonely or afraid.

Give yourself fully to the adventure of today. Walk boldly along the path of Life, relying on your ever-present Companion. You have every reason to be confident because My Presence accompanies you all the days of your life-and onward into eternity.

Do not give in to fear or worry, those robbers of abundant living. Trust Me enough to face problems as they come, rather than trying to anticipate them. Fix your eyes on Me, the Author and Perfecter of your faith, and many difficulties on the road ahead will vanish before you reach them. Whenever you start to feel afraid, remember that I am holding you by your right hand. Nothing can separate you from My Presence!

LET MY UNFAILING LOVE be your comfort. One definition of "comfort" is a person or thing that makes you feel less upset or frightened during a time of trouble. Because you live in such a broken world, trouble is never far away. There are many sources of comfort in a the world, yet only one of them is unfailing: My Love! Other sources will help you some of the time, but My tender Presence is with you all of the time.

GOD'S WILL

Think about the world around you. What might "doing good" require today? Ask God to reveal what His Will for you is, and spend a couple minutes creating space for Him to speak to you.

A PRAYER FOR RECONCILIATION

God, thank You for being the God who restores and brings peace. You are steady. You are good. I ask for Your strength to love and serve those around me. Help me share the healing and hope I have in You with others. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

A PRAYER FOR LOVING OTHERS

God, sometimes it's hard to love others. But even when people are unkind, I want to choose to love them because You love them. Encourage me to love others even when it's challenging, and give me opportunities each day to go out of my way to show Your love to everyone I encounter. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

THE VALUE OF EACH OTHER

As much as the world around us tries to lure us into self-dependency, God created us for each other. For community. For a life that's not alone.

The author of Proverbs said it like this:

"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity."
Proverbs 17:17 NIV

We'll all face hard times-sometimes when we least expect it. But a friend's genuine care can mean the world, a sibling's unconditional love can't be replaced, and a neighbor's practical help is priceless.

We need each other more than we realize: emotionally, practically, and spiritually.

If you've found yourself in a busy season where you've unintentionally neglected your true friends or been too busy for your real family, now is the time to reprioritize.

SHOWING LOVE AS A DISCIPLE

There are so many ways in which we show love to others every day. Doing something nice for a friend or family member - or even a stranger - is showing love. Praying for others is love. For me, one of the most powerful way we show love as a disciple of Jesus is forgiveness. In 1970, a movie came out called "Love Story." In it, there was an often quoted line: "Love is never having to say you're sorry." I believe that "Love" is just the opposite. I have a feeling that Jesus would agree with me. Jesus told Peter that we must forgive "seventy times seven." We are told in the Lord's Prayer that we will be forgiven as we forgive, and the most powerful sign of love and forgiveness is when He forgave the soldiers who were nailing Him to the cross.

CALLED TO CONTENTMENT

Observing Sabbath-rest allows us to step into the same rhythm God established in creating the world. Scripture tell us when God rested from His work, it was because His work was complete (Genesis 2:1). God took joy in His accomplishment.

In Hebrews 4:10, the writer draws a parallel between God's rest and ours: "for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his." We're invited to delight in His presence and share in God's divine contentment.

Lord of Peace,

When something in my life or thoughts makes me anxious, I need to come to You and talk with You about it. So I come boldly into Your Presence today, bringing You my prayer and petition with thanksgiving. Lord, I thank You for this opportunity to trust You more. The lessons of trust You send me are usually wrapped in difficulties, but I've learned that their benefits far outweigh the cost.

You have taught me that well-developed trust brings many blessings-not the least of which is Your Peace. Your Word assures me You will keep me in perfect Peace to the extent that my mind is stayed on You, trusting in You.

It is a rare treasure, dazzling in delicate beauty, yet strong enough to withstand all onslaughts. Wear My Peace with regal dignity. It will keep your heart and mind close to Mine.

BELOVED, FIND REST IN ME ALONE. YOUR HOPE comes from Me.

Rest and hope make a wonderful combination, and you can find plenty of both in Me. Some people search for the best bed or pillow-or even sleeping pill-in their quest for deep sleep, but only I can provide what you really need. When you rest trustingly in My Presence, I not only refresh you-I fill you with hope.

Hope can make the difference between life and death Prisoners of war who stop hoping are much less likely to survive. The same is true of people who are battling life-threatening illnesses. So it is important to nurture well your precious hope. It is also vital to place your hope ultimately in Me. Circumstances change all the time, but I am the same yesterday, today, and forever. Moreover, I love you with perfect, life-giving Love. My unfailing Love rests upon you as you put your hope in Me.

You are My beloved in whom I delight; this is your permanent identity.

Grand Evening Prayer-Thursday, February 13th, 2025

Lord, when others oppose me, in my humanness, I desire to retaliate. Guide my actions, so that I do not repay evil for evil. Instead, empower me by the love that You poured out on me even when I was Your enemy, to pass on the warmth of Your kindness. And I pray that as I do, You would bring the light of Your love into the hearts and homes of others. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
