Beaucoup se sont questionnés quant à la ressemblance du château avec la Maison Blanche de Washington D.C. La façade sud du château français est en effet quasi-identique à la résidence présidentielle américaine. On trouve effectivement la même rotonde et six colonnes en style néoclassique.
Une des théories les plus populaires pour expliquer cette ressemblance fait intervenir Thomas Jefferson. À l’époque, il était en effet ambassadeur des États-Unis à Paris. En 1789, il se rend donc à Bordeaux et visite l’école d’architecture. On pense qu’il y aurait vu une copie des plans du château de Rastignac et s’en serait donc inspiré à son retour aux États-Unis. L’auteur des plans était Charles-Louis Clérisseau, avec qui Jefferson était ami selon certains.
