To properly answer your question I would need more info.

example 1. If you are in the military and say working on ordnance and you do your job well and that "bomb" does its job and destroys the building and occupants inside, then you have indirectly taken lives.
example 2. If you are dealing with a robbery and the individual starts to bring the gun up to a family members head and you shot and kill the robber, then you have taken a life in self defense.
example 3. If you are drunk and full of gusto and the stupidity is flowing strong and you decide to shoot up the bar and kill people, then you have taken needless lives in cold blood.

So to answer your question, the circumstances will greatly effect each persons answer depending on the situation.

Many think they can, but truth be told. they freeze.
Many people have never touched or held a dead body.
Even more people have never had to chose.
I would leave it up to God to push me to make a choice that cannot be undone.
That being said, I will fight, bite, tear and rip.
I will break bones and destroy someone if need be.
Concealed carry gives people a false sense of bravado.
I would rather hit someone in the head with a can of beans or anything else than to have to draw my firearm. Yes I have experienced it many times. Trained personnel are more afraid of an untrained person with a gun, that a trained person with a gun, because their is less restraint and more adrenaline.
Just some ramblings from the woods.

Seeing and handling dead bodies is tougher than people can imagine. It takes emotional stability to deal with some of those cases. Rolling off ambulances isn't for the feeble hearted.

I was faced with this 4 years ago. Gun in hand shaking, praying that I didn't have to pull the trigger. Thank God that he never drew.
