IMMIGRANTS
Did you ever wonder how Joseph and Mary made out in Egypt? Did they know the language? Did they find a community from Judea that welcomed them? Was Joseph able to find work so that he could support his family? Joseph and Mary were immigrants in Egypt fleeing danger, unable to return home for fear that they would be killed and, more important, that Jesus would be killed.
I can't imagine what they must have felt because I have only visited other countries where I didn't know the language, I didn't have to stay, I could return home. However, thousands of men, women, and children each day are threatened with death, persecution or starvation and flee to other countries hoping to build a better, safer life for themselves and their families.

Sometimes they find welcome, and often they are turned back or sent to camps where they hope they will find the help they need to get a better place. For some of you reading this today, this is your story. For others of you, you are on the "welcoming" committee! You are the ones that can make todays immigrants feel more at home, or just as unwelcome as they were in their own country.
We are all children of the one God. We are all called to welcome the stranger as Matthew tells us in 25:35. We are told that if we refuse to do this to the least of our brothers and sisters, we refuse Jesus. If we are given the opportunity to be of service to a family of immigrants lucky enough to escape their situation and come to safety, we need to remember that we are being asked to welcome the Holy Family with love.
