THE FEAST OF STEPHEN

In some countries, this is a day of gift giving. The carol, "Good King Wenceslas" talks upon looking out on the feast of Stephen and seeing a poor man who he decided to help on this very snowy night. For many of us tonight will be very snowy as well, and in the feet of St. Stephen, one of the original deacons who were commissioned to help the poor especially the widows and orphans, and the king who went out of his way to help a stranger, perhaps we can find a way to help others whether we know them or not. Is there someone who could use a helping hand? In this cold, is there a person who could use a coat or jacket you no longer use? Perhaps the nearest soup kitchen could use a helping hand or a donation. The best gift we can give is the gift of self.

While so many people will be out exchanging gifts and looking for after-Christmas sales, what can we do to give the gift of self to someone? Maybe we need to visit a friend or relative we haven't seen in a while or make a call to that person in our lives that we've neglected. If it did snow, maybe a neighbor needs some help. If there are still leaves on the ground, maybe you could rake them. Perhaps some left overs would be enjoyed by the elderly man or woman who lives alone? Let's take some time on this Feast of Stephen to remember the importance of serving others, and find a way to do it.
