ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE FOR KING DAVID
King David is not a legendary figure preserved only in the Bible. He is a historically grounded individual whose existence is supported by multiple archaeological discoveries outside of Scripture. For years critics claimed David was a mythical tribal figure invented by later writers. That claim collapsed under the weight of physical evidence uncovered in the soil of the ancient Near East.
The most famous and decisive artifact is the Tel Dan Stele, discovered in northern Israel in the 1990s. This stone inscription was written by an Aramean king in the 9th century BC and records a military victory over Israel and Judah. It explicitly refers to the “House of David.” This phrase is critical. Ancient Near Eastern cultures did not name dynasties after fictional characters. The inscription confirms that David was a real king and that his royal line was well known to Israel’s enemies less than 150 years after his reign.
Additional support comes from the Mesha Stele, also known as the Moabite Stone, dated to the same general period. While debated in some details, many scholars agree it contains a reference to the House of David as well. Together, these inscriptions demonstrate that David founded a recognized dynasty, just as the Bible records.
Archaeology from Jerusalem itself also aligns with the biblical account. Excavations in the City of David have uncovered large fortified structures dating to the 10th century BC, the time of David and Solomon. These findings show Jerusalem was not a small village, but a functioning capital capable of housing a royal administration. This directly contradicts earlier claims that David’s kingdom was too insignificant to be historical.
Taken together, the archaeological record confirms what Scripture has always stated.

David was a real king, founder of a real dynasty, ruling from a real Jerusalem. The same man who wrote many of the Psalms, who looked at the heavens and declared them the work of God’s fingers, also walked the streets of a city whose stones still testify to his existence. Archaeology does not create David. It confirms him.

Absolutely amazing how much hard evidence of the historical accuracy of the Bible has been literally 'dug up' over the years. I understand that Luke's testimony has been near a goto for accurate names and locations of ancient cities and towns thought not to exist used by archeologists that then went and found them.
I think it was the existence of the ancient Hittites that was questioned for a long time for lack of any other reference than the Bible that was indeed eventually established by archaeology.
