If I added up all the taxes I've paid, I'm certain that the state, federal and local governments have made a lot more money on me than I kept for me.

Uh, property taxes are a local/municipality issue. Visit your local politician.
Note: the dog catcher ( nephew of mayor) must have a pension plan for 20 years of strenuous work.
Definitely, not a federal issue.
