Given every two years to a sample of America's children, the National Assessment of Educational Progress is considered one of the best gauges of the academic progress.

A love of learning to read starts at home. Parents can play games like showing a child a sign along the road and helping the child "sound it out" ie phonics. My kids made a game of trying to say the words on trucks, signs and such when we traveled.😇

Children are so eager to learn at a young age - I taught my youngest granddaughter to add & subtract at 2

Absolutely! Parents can begin homeschooling as early as 2-3. Give kids a head start. Make learning fun. Teach resoning too, that is so important. I would teach my kids math in the grocery store. I let them weight the apples then show them how much they were per pound, look for the least expensive product, showed them how to read the size of items, things like that. Let them buy a treat with the coins I gave them and showed them what was the best deal to get more for their money. We had fun at the grocery store. 😊
You are right and wrong at the same time. You can teach phonics at home and when they get to school they are forced to learn "Whole Language" which only messes them up worse. Same for writing cursive. My eldest went into school knowing how to write in cursive and then the school forced her to write everything in print format. to this day, it is how she writes almost everything.
We found a lady in Houston who taught remedial lessons for victims of whole language and she found a correlation between it and lazy eye issues among other things. She did a 2 hour presentation to a group of us and I invited the investigative reporter from Channel 5 News. He followed up with a 3 day investigative expose on how bad whole language really was..

The best course of action is to return to teaching reading phonetically then it seems. Then no mix ups when kids get to school. 😊

The car traveling game of 'abc' is a great one too
I was here early in 2021, then got "spooked". I am back because I want to live. I read a lot. I observe. I listen. I have faith in us.
I agree with both you and Kris about phonics. A daughter of my friend wanted to read a book to me. It was very clear within three pages that she was not learning phonics but rather memorizing words on sight because she could not sound out the first word she forgot. I had no idea this was going on until that experience. It was very sad because I love reading and still remember the Letter People and Hooked on Phonics.
The garbage you reference is called "Whole Language" and they tried implementing it in my city when my kids were young. Myself and another gentleman fought it and they brought back the phonics .

Yes, we did this as well, not the names on trucks, but that is a brilliant idea. We had many cr games to make it fun, learn, and just keep things always moving forward. Reading to our children is so important and I would love to see Phonics come back as that is how I learned!!! There are so many ways to teach reading, comprehension, and more! We the parents and the elders should be the role models and continue the education! Listen to your elders, comes to mind! 💛
