“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
Hebrews 13:8 KJV

The Unchanging Christ

There are two things in this text that are most apparent: one, what is denied; and the other, what is affirmed—the unchanging Christ. What is denied? That the Lord ever changes; that time, or circumstance, or provocation, or mood ever alter Him. We change, men change, but He never changes.

One day we are weak, and the next day we’re strong. One day we are resolved, the next day we are unstable as water. One day we are filled with trepidation and overcome by temptation, then we are for a moment holy; the next day we are once again led astray. Our lives change, but He casts no shadow by turning; the same unchanging Christ forever.

Time changes us. We fade away with the multiplying years, but He abides eternal. Moods change us. We are one day this way and one day another way; one day like a rock, and the next day like a reed. But He is the same steadfast Lord in faithfulness, in devotion, in consecration. Circumstances change us. The butler, who is elevated in the household of Pharaoh, forgets the lad Joseph in prison [Genesis 40:23], a typical circumstance of practically all of human life. What is affirmed? That He is the same yesterday, and today, and forever. Whether in the yesteryear gone by, or whether in the today, or whether in the tomorrow He is always the same in His person, in His offices, and in His presence. What a comfort to know that though I may change, He will not. What a comfort to know that though my life fades away, He abides forever. What a solace and what a comfort to know that though my feet may tremble, the Rock on which I stand is never moved. And what a blessedness to realize that the salvation He has offered to me is like Christ Himself, unchanging, abiding forever and forever.
