The biggest distraction right now is people trying to make ends meet. I'm not sure they will pay attention to these issues, important as they are, if they are struggling to put gas in the car to go to work, food on the table and pay the bills. Poor people struggling to subsist don't have time to monitor the wealthy and what they're getting up to, and the people at the top know this. Keeping people poor keeps them controllable.
