I have found what I feel could be a good combo on Substack: free to view articles, but making posting a comment paid. Helps weed out trolls. I could also imagine them splitting out the content from the notification, and me charging for the email notification. Timeliness is valuable... and writers need to get paid.
Trolls have more money. Demons pay them whatever they need
