DNS resolving was overburdened because billions of devices tried finding facebook servers. These services weren't down, DNS servers were and ALL serves ended up potentially unreachable.
The ones displayed on top are the ones people searched for the most.

You're right, because on a network things can have a ripple effect. Facebook infrastructure went offline, billions of devices looking for those servers overburdened other infrastructure and made other services hard to reach.
It wasn't a coincidence, but there's no plot behind it either.
