If I can offer you just one piece of advice it would be to pray.
Pray because God really does exist. Pray because it sends help to you or whatever you pray about. That help may not save a life but it will make the death much easier, much more peaceful. Pray because it calms your spirit and gives you strength to know there is something much greater than you. Pray because it renews your faith because in the end faith is everything.

calming the spirit is very real though it cannot be quantified by those with no spiritual connection
I personally do no know how those who do not have that connection or a belief can even want to endure this world, the only thing I can think of is their drive is the fear there is nothing else while our solice comes from knowing there is.
