Most of the children rescued
did not survive the
ascend to the surface.
There was a young female soldier that
would give updates.
She held her composure
very well.

The children who perished as a result of being rescued from DEEP beneath Central Park likely died of the same conditions high altitude climbers sometimes suffer, which is Pulmonary or Cerebral Adema due to altitude change.
DUMBs that are 10km or approximately 33,000 feet deep are deeper than Mount Everest is high. Atmospheric pressure changes that occur too fast can result in lung tissue damage & ruptured blood vessels in the lungs, filling the lungs with fluid, or blood vessels of the brain also rupturing, and both conditions can be quickly fatal.
So children thought rescued brought to the surface had to be rushed back down to the depths and in many cases didn't survive the sudden atmospheric pressure change, totally heartbreaking. The children had no time to acclimatize as they were being rescued. Many had to be treated underground.
One other factor was probably growing up without sunlight, ever, and their little bodies couldn't tolerate the sun.

THE BENDS is gas bubbles forming inside the body from the decompression of our body's liquids, and those bubbles tear up our cells, for example, like little explosions.
Edema is where blood vessels literally start hemorrhaging due to the lack of pressure, basically not able to contain our blood and fluids, alveoli in the lungs also start rupturing and capillaries in the brain and everywhere. Lungs start gurgling. YIKES! You can actually spot the cerebral edema in a climber's eyes, for example a high-altitude climber who's eyes suddenly become all bloodshot. Then it's GET THEM DOWN QUICK and we also used what were called Gamov Bags that literally are fabric but sealed Human sized bags you put the victim in and then pump it up with a foot pump to MIMIC descending in altitude, pressurizing the Gamov bag, but those are temporary and no substitute for getting someone DOWN ASAP.
Hyperbaric chambers for BENDS are similar, to get the bubbles to reabsorb & disappear.

if you come back up
too quickly that will happen.
That can happen to
any healthy diver.
It also may be a
contributing factor to the death rate.

The Bends (I'm also a diver) usually requires first compression then too rapid a decompression, because it's air bubbles that literally re-bubble out the blood like soda pop (and the body's cells) that were previously compressed into absorption. Very painful & deadly, too.
Edema is more likely from simply rising in altitude too fast. The Children were down there for a long time, many born there. Bringing a child from a 10km deep dumb on an elevator to the surface would be like going from sea level to the top of Mount Everest in one jolt and most people would die instantly from that.
The atmospheric pressures underground (if uncontrolled which likely is the case for some of the hellish deep caves, tunnels and such (where kids were raised without atmosphere controlled DUMBs) would be very heavy indeed, so bringing a child up without acclimatization (which can take days to weeks) would be deadly, too.
Rescuing them then having them perish in ones' arms would be HORRIFIC. 😢
