Dutch dike reinforcements not possible due to ‘nitrogen’, major concerns about safety: ‘It’s getting crazier and crazier’.

Several dikes will not be reinforced for the time being as a result of the ‘problems surrounding nitrogen’. Water boards are very concerned about safety.

Several dike reinforcements are planned, but they need to be re-examined. An example is the improvement of the dike between Echteld and Dodewaard and the Grebbedijk near Wageningen.

In a number of cases, permits need to be re-applied for. Judges have ruled that no additional nitrogen may be released during a dike reinforcement project.

A few plants are more important than safe living behind the dike.

Recording of April 3, 2025 near The Hague:
five holes in the sea wall at the Meijendel water extraction area (north of the Scheveningen Zwarte Pad)

Here it is visible that Rijkswaterstaat's theory is incorrect. In almost 10 years, no super dunes have been formed & there is no vegetation growth but silting/salination!

A sea wall is a barrier that prevents the sea from flowing into lower land or a freshwater basin.

Courts have ruled no extra nitrogen can be released, even for critical infrastructure. This has sparked safety concerns, as water boards warn that human lives might be at risk for the sake of protecting a few sensitive plants.
