The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Defense over new press restrictions, instituted in October 2025. The suit, filed in federal court, challenges the policy that forced Pentagon reporters to surrender their press passes rather than accept the new terms.
“The policy is an attempt to exert control over reporting the government dislikes,” said Times spokesperson Charlie Stadtlander.
The lawsuit, which names Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Pentagon officials, seeks the repeal of the policy, claiming it violates First and Fifth Amendment rights. The Times aims for a declaration that the policy is unconstitutional and an injunction to prevent its enforcement.
This action comes after multiple reporters, including those from The Times, were excluded from Pentagon press briefings. Hegseth has been criticized for promoting MAGA influencers as the “new Pentagon press corps,” while sidelining experienced journalists.

🚨 Tim Pool says a vehicle OPENED FIRE at his house last night!
“Last night a vehicle approached our property and opened fire. No one was hurt. Our security team is reviewing the incident and will be relaying the report to appropriate law enforcement This is the price we pay for speaking out against evil,” Pool said in a X post. “My immediate thoughts is someone was trying to scare us. But we have a security gate and armed guards and its possible this deterred something more serious.”
