FYI ... state banks still exist. I've got my acc't in one here in N. Missouri. Very rural area .. Putnam County State Bank .. it has only two branches in two small neighboring towns

Very friendly, customer oriented and well run.

Yup .. much better too. Though I had a very weird (and very BAD) experience switching over to a CU when we moved out to Colorado from Michigan years ago.
We wired a $1000 from our acc't in a Fed Reserve bank to open an acc't in a local CU in a very small Co town. We were doing a lot of traveling at that time so just assumed the money was there and wrote checks on it. Traveling, word took awhile to catch up to us but our checks were bouncing. It ended up taking 3 WEEKS for the money to get into our acc't.
We got everything settled and paid up w/ mucho charges of course and then wired another $1000 out to the CU. Still traveling again it took time for word to get to us that again our checks were bouncing. Again it took another several weeks for the transfer. Again we settled and again wired $1000 use and AGAIN went through the same thing. We couldn't believe what was happening even once much less 3 times and thought well it couldn't possibly happened again ..

... and wired another $1000 .. but AGAIN w/ the same results. By then our name was absolutely MUD up and down that entire valley. We even had to deal w/ an arrest warrant. It was a complete disaster.

The scary part was my wife's mother was the VP of the Fed bank we were wiring from and she said SHE could not discover why it was happening. Thankfully the bank ended up covering all the charges but our reputation in what we'd hoped to be our new home was completely ruined.

In the end all we could figure and what it looked like was that the Fed system was playing dirty w/ the CU system.
