Today in History, March 15, 44 BC THE IDES OF MARCH.
Julius Caesar’s Assassination – The Ides of March. Caesar, Rome’s dictator-for-life, gets stabbed 23 times by a posse of senators, including Brutus, in the Theatre of Pompey. It’s a power grab gone bloody—meant to save the Republic, it sparks civil war and paves the way for Augustus and the Empire. Shakespeare immortalized it: “Et tu, Brute?” Still echoes as a betrayal benchmark.
