Some of us realized it, but had no recourse. I was diagnosed with Polyneuropathy from DDT exposure as a child. Stabbing random pains throughout my body since I was 8 years old (they used to spray our country road area with DDT for mosquitos, all while a commercial on tv taught us to sing "Bugs won't lite on me, cause I got my DDT" ) as we ran behind the bug truck, encouraged by our parents to run in the spray so mowsquitos would not lite on us and bite.
