I am not older than dirt-BUT-I grew up this way
Our doors were never locked-I always imagine
God walking through our front door

I didn't know we were poor

Born knowing there is a God

Grew 1/2 acre of food on our 1 acre of land

Proud of how my Parents raised me & siblings

I grew up the same way. We grew our own food, and both sets of grandparents grew theirs as well.

One grandmother canned everything under the sun and they had a shed with shelves and shelves of canned food.

I can remember all of us sitting around a big circle, shucking corn. We made homemade ice cream, and grandad said we couldn't have any unless we took turns at the crank.

We never locked our doors and I used to walk to school by myself since first grade.

At my grandparents houses, I would go out in the garden as a kid and pull up carrots, wash them off with the hose and eat them, eat green beans and cherry tomatoes off the vine. We also had apples, strawberries and raspberries.

Grandma made the best sauerkraut and pickles.

We had tomato, cucumber and red onion sandwiches. One slice of our beefsteak tomatoes completely covered a slice of bread.

When I left home to go to college, the first thing I noticed was tomatoes just didn't taste the same.

My moms home canned green beans were to die for - people don't know what they are missing. I buy Mennonite pickled beets that tasted like moms. As a child we didn't know how great we had it until it is gone...mom made peanut butter fudge & poured it over freshly popped popcorn, so good..Saturday night was float night. Dad was in a band before I was born Every week-end we sang all the old songs Dad's sister harmonized & mom yodeled - I was the youngest so I went through all the songs from the 20's onward...now people have phones stuck in their face with no communication...I refuse to own a cell phone..I grew up without a phone...Life was grand back then

Looking back, life was indeed grand back then!
No cell phones, no computers and somehow we managed just fine!

Mom's greatest words of wisdom:
"Go outside and play!"
