About 2 years ago or more I went digging on this very subject.
Early Hollywood (all their black and white films) was full of either gays or men dressed as women or transgendered people, mostly male to female.
The names of that era were dead give- aways.
SYD Charisse, or
Barbara STANwyck
are two good examples.
