“Resigning” as a General means “we have something on you”.

You don’t “resign” from the Military. Your contracts either up, you are fired or retire.

Nobody tells their superior what they’re going to do.

General Officers hold their rank by virtue of a commission granted by the President of the United States with the advice and consent of the Senate.

Technically, a general officer could be removed from their commission by the President, but this is rare and typically only occurs in cases of serious misconduct or wrongdoing.

In most cases, if a general officer is relieved of their command or asked to step down, they will retire from the military voluntarily.
