In the pre printing press days, a Town Cryer would spread the news the people living in the castle would want you to know.

Or, a proclamation of direction to tell people what to do.

They would nail it to the castle wall for the towns folk to read.

The media are no different, the advent of printing presses meant those in the castles just had to change the mode they used of spreading their directions and selective information.
