I've heard words to this affect, many times over the past 30, or so, years. It's never sat well with, me, though, and it still doesn't. To my way of thinking, it gives too much power to pain, and not enough to being good for the sake of being good.
But that's just me.

I get that. Pain is a messenger, but I still don't think that we need to experience pain in order to feel good.
Pain is there to tell us something, and if we listen to it, and take appropriate steps to set things right, then that pain has served it's purpose. However, never have I been grateful for the pain, itself, but instead, for my willingness to recognize the pain, and learn from it.
