Agreeing with you that there is a 'hail Mary pass' hopium with the SotH avenue for Trump. Not only would it be a 'snuck in the back door' vibe to its legitimacy but once you are president you don't run for the lessor role of congress. It certainly wouldn't fit Trump's alpha personality. Observe that he never ran for office prior to bidding for the highest office.
I see it as another trolling mechanism forcing a reaction from the DS and expending their ammunition.
