This brown Spotted Orbweaver (Neoscona crucifera) was making an intricate web under a lamp. After catching and eating a moth for dinner, the orbweaver collected the large web by rolling it into a ball and retreated to a secluded position to sleep until the next night.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one to have this idea; just wish that it was full sized and not just for looks.. Idk, it's kinda cool. Mine of course would have windows and mirrors as well as headlights, corner lights, and tail lights. 😎

I found an ant colony that was tending to some eggs under a flowerpot. Some of the eggs were curling as if wanting to walk by themselves. The ants started moving out when the sunlight appeared, lifting the eggs gently with their mandibles and carrying them to a nearby wooden shelter. I replaced their roof with the flowerpot to deflect the incoming rain, and left their new home undisturbed. The ants are still happy with their digs tonight, and have been taking chunks of suet dropped by the birds. Ants can be very smart, notably their communicative methods for assigning tasks and gathering information about their environment.

Spring has brought some beautiful blooms of flowers and trees to Virginia. The bees have been busy with their pollination activities, spreading grains of yellow pollen into the air. The rains and increasing temperatures are promoting more growth this April, and soon there will be lush gardens filled with more of the returning perennial plants and new annuals.

I experienced the Great American Eclipse under some clouds that rolled in, as is typical for astronomical events, during the moment of maximum eclipse. The birds stopped singing except for one squawking bird in a tall tree, the squirrels went home, the color of the ambient light changed from orange to blue as it would in the evening, the shadows on the ground became softer, the wind speed increased and the temperature cooled. It was eerily quiet for a few minutes before the normal activity returned with the unveiled sunlight; several sunspots were visible during this April 8th solar eclipse.
