How did a petty officer get permission to talk about this to the news and why would the news air him? Despite the sound of the name, a petty officer is not an officer. He is just an enlisted man.

Would never happen. Not how the military operates. The official press conference from the pentagon, Colonel Steve Roark with US Air Force states that he knows that the plane did NOT contact the tower at Martha's Vineyard. This was at about 1:22 pm Eastern time the next day.
