Just a thought:
10 days of darkness in the whitehouse. Children leaving the whitehouse at night. If they have been in tunnels for years, they couldn't stand the light, they couldn't adapt right away. If.. could that be why?

Perhaps all the Military that is there in DC is also clearing out the tunnels, then they need to use the Rods of God on them, so when all these animals are locked up in their prision, they do not have a way out. Collapse them and then weld shut the doors at each intersection.
