Following college, Mrs. Smith began her career as a secretary with the Central Intelligence Agency in October 1953. She worked her way up to the Director's Office where she was secretary to William E. Colby.
At the time of her retirement from the CIA in 1987, Mrs. Smith was Chief of Protocol. Mrs. Smith was the first woman to be awarded the Distinguished Intelligence Medal, which she received upon her retirement.
