Why wasn't it called Biden Island or something like that? Probably because James Biden only bought a parcel of land, then split it into thirds, and then sold 1/3 to someone that gave him money for a mortgage on the rest of the 2/3. So Bidens did not own the entire Water island, but only a smaller portion.
