A+ FOR EQUITY? Oregon gov. signs new law allowing students to graduate without proving they can read, write or do math hoping to “help children of color.”
Dem. Governor Kate Brown quietly signed a bill last month removing the requirement for high school graduate children to be proficient in reading, writing and math in hopes of aiding “students of color.”
Deputy comms. director, Charles Boyle said suspending reading, writing and math proficiency would benefit “students of color” while the state comes up with a new set of ‘equitable’ graduation standards.
Until that time, the suspension will help those who are “Black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, [or] Tribal,” Boyle added.
