The reason the fund or anyone with a "short position" going against them has to buy those borrowed shares back is when their "margin" (amount they borrowed from the brokerage) begins to threaten the profitability of the brokerage firm itself. When you're talking a billion here, a billion there, you're beginning to talk real money.
Going massively short against any company is an aggressive move, if not downright hostile, b/c they're trying to send the company into bankruptcy.
High risk, pretty high reward... for the shortseller.
