My dad owned a gas station, cars could get gas based on whether their address was an odd or even number. When it was time to close, an attendant had to pick a car to be the end of the line and had to walk with that car and a sign saying “last car” ..... the bribes to move the sign back, or to look the other way on the address, would have made someone a very happy camper, people were desperate.
