The sap of pine and fir trees and their nuts (from the cones) was herbal medicine of the first order in the ancient world. It is mentioned more often than any other medicine (and there are many) in the ancient herbals of Assyria and Syria alike, with counterparts found in Hatussa, Babylon and elsewhere. Today, pine nuts are still a good source of food to many in Asia and Africa.
