I wish I understood what the heck this meant, but I'm homeschooling my 7 and 4 year old and I have about 3 braincells left by this time of day. 🥴

The most commonly used ion channel for stimulation in optogenetics is Channelrhodopsin-2. Neurons are triggered in the same way (by moving ions from outside the cell to the inside). Once a certain number of positive ions have crossed the cell membrane, a threshold is reached which causes the neuron to fire.

Optogenetics enables manipulation of biological processes with light at high spatio-temporal resolution to control the behavior of cells, networks, or even whole animals.

There are mainly two types of NIR-activatable optogenetic tools: one uses lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles to transduce NIR light to visible light to modulate classical opsin-expressing neurons; the other type couples with an NIR absorber to convert NIR light to heat to activate thermosensitive proteins. These NIR-activatable optogenetic tools enable low-invasive "remote control" activation and inhibition of cellular signaling pathways.

remote control

noun: remote control; modifier noun: remote-control
control of a machine or apparatus from a distance by means of radio or infrared signals transmitted from a device.

"the bomb was detonated by remote control"

a device that controls an apparatus by means of radio or infrared signals.

plural noun: remote controls; noun: remote controller; plural noun: remote controllers

"he turned the volume down by means of his remote control"

the scientists made nanoparticles that can anchor tightly to photoreceptor cells and act as tiny infrared light transducers. When infrared light hits the retina, the nanoparticles capture the longer infrared wavelengths and emit shorter wavelengths within the visible light range.

Infrared (IR) light is used by electrical heaters, cookers for cooking food, short-range communications like remote controls, optical fibres, security systems and thermal imaging cameras which detect people in the dark.

keep (someone) in the dark (about something)

To keep someone uninformed (about something); to exclude someone from full knowledge or disclosure (of something).
