This is a quote from Christina Haag, a woman he knew and dated for a long time. It's from her memoir, "Come to the Edge," describing the apartment he got when he started law school.
(She also had mentioned that he would remember different things about his father, saying "my dad would do that..." And said when they lived in DC for a while, when she was in a play there, she found he had never been to the JFK Memorial. One day though, they rode their bikes there and knelt down and said a prayer at the flame... Must've been so painful for him... You go when you can handle it...)
A little later, in the same chapter, she said, "Conscious of it or not, he had found a persona." (This was in regards to constantly interacting with people who recognized him and wanted to say something to honor his father -- and said the "persona" was "a necessary removal that allowed him to walk this world and keep his kindness intact.")
