At the Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery of St Petersburg, the President laid a wreath at the Motherland monument

About 500,000 people are buried in the cemetery's communal graves. The memorial wall behind the Motherland monument carries a quote by poet Olga Bergholz: "No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten."

Leningrad is the only city with a population of several million in history to have withstood a nearly 900-day siege. The Nazi blockade lasted 872 days, from September 8, 1941 to January 27, 1944.
