Archons in Gnosticism
In Gnostic cosmology, Archons are malevolent or ignorant spiritual beings who serve as the administrators of the physical universe.
Origins: They were created by the Demiurge (often identified as Yaldabaoth), a flawed, arrogant creator god who mistakenly believed himself to be the supreme deity. In some myths, the Demiurge was an accidental offspring of the divine being Sophia, born without a partner and cast out of the higher spiritual realm (the Pleroma).
The Seven and Twelve: Archons are typically identified with the seven classical planets (the Hebdomad) or the twelve signs of the zodiac.
Yaldabaoth (Saturn): The "Child of Chaos" and chief ruler, often depicted with a lion's face and a serpent's body.

Iao (Jupiter): Often representing law or divine authority.
Sabaoth (Mars): Sometimes seen as a figure who repented and turned toward the light.
Role as Jailers: Gnostics believed the material world was a cosmic prison. The Archons' primary goal is to trap the "divine spark" (the human soul) within physical bodies and prevent it from returning to the true, transcendent God.
Obstacles to Salvation: To escape after death, a soul must pass through the planetary spheres of the Archons. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, seekers needed gnosis (secret spiritual knowledge) to provide the correct passwords or signs to bypass these "gatekeepers".
