The Challenger aircraft is known for its intolerance of any shred of ice or frost on its wings. It is infamous for having a dusting of frost on the shadowed wing (after parking overnight and the rising sun melting the frost on sunny wing but not the other) causing it to roll on take off, because one wing lifts and the other doesn't.
All the money trail facts could be true, but the weather was very, very likely to be the reason for the crash.
