Finally, the cherry on top: RML researchers (including the Dutch branch) already tested remdesivir early on MERS in rhesus monkeys — work that directly led to the rapid push for this drug against COVID-19. Gilead supplied the stuff, NIH/RML demonstrated efficacy in models, and boom: Remdesivir was quickly approved and thrown onto the market as a “COVID treatment” — despite mixed results and high costs. Dutch virologists helped lay the preclinical foundation that made this possible.
