“The second state of man after death is called the state of his interiors, because he is then let into the interiors which are of his mind, or of his will and thought; and the exteriors, in which he had been in his first state, are laid asleep. Whoever attends to man's life and speech and actions, may know that every one has both exteriors and interiors, or exterior and interior thoughts and intentions. This he may know from the following considerations: in society one thinks of others according to what he has heard and learned of them, from report or from conversation; but he does not speak with them according to his thought, and though they be evil, still he treats them with civility.
