Seems to me DJT went about this the wrong way. People are naturally going to be defensive about the big bad USA saying they're just going to march in and take over a sovereign nation.
The US already has military bases and installations there. Why not just quietly expand until you do take over? In the meantime, build infrastructure and win the hearts and minds of the locals.
